It is always encouraging when I read through scripture and see true humanity. It's that inner struggle we all face at times which Paul spoke of when he said, "I not do what I want but I keep doing what I don't want to do." (paraphrased) Our heavenly Father knew we needed to have record not only of the victorious side of life but the often hard truth of every day life issues.
I see such a person in the writer of Proverbs 30. In the first couple of verses he seems to be discouraged. His words show a lack of confidence my stating, "I am more stupid than any man..." Yet as we continue to read, the tone shifts in verse 4 when he starts to talk form a comparison of God and man. The description of God given shows us a man who, in wisdom and not stupidity, decides to be encouraged by reminding himself of who God is. He is choosing to recognize that even the wisest of men do not measure of the the fullness of God. Let's look at what he said........
"Who has ascended into heaven, or descended?
Who has gathered the wind in His fists?
Who has bound the waters in a garment?
Who as established all the ends of the earth?
What is His name, and what is His Son's name? If you know?
What imagery! As I read through that verse I just had to pause for a moment. Closing my eyes I starting picturing how great our God is to be able to gather the wind. Just picture a hurricane sitting in His palm! Or try to imagine a piece of cloth large enough to hold all the waters of earth; yet small enough for Him to fold those four corners of cloth together! Who could this be? What is His name?
God. Abba. Yahweh. Jesus. Elohim. Adonai.
In verse 5, he proclaims God's purity and strength to protect those who choose to trust Him. Why? Because He is!! No one is as great as our Creator!
The rest of the chapter, the writer leans more to giving instruction. But I was captivated in place as I sat remembering the many attributes of my God! He is who He says He is!! Every book in the Bible declares an attribute of God and His Son. He is everything we need today. He will be everything we need tomorrow.
If His hand can fold the oceans up like a blanket, can't He gently hold me in His palm? Let's choose to lean into that gentle hand today. Let Him cradle us in the palm of His hand. There, He will carry, comfort and hold us while we allow His strength to become our rest.
