Proverbs 18:10 says "The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe."
Years ago I walked through a massive spiritual attack in my life. I was preparing to move overseas for the second time to work with campus ministry in South Africa. As preparation got deeper and the move more real the enemy waged war. One way that the enemy fought me was through anxiety. Every day at least once a day a wave of anxiety would hit me to the point of being nauseous. But the Lord taught me how to fight.
When I read this verse in Proverbs it reminded me of that season. The way the Lord taught me to fight was by pushing into His presence. The enemy can't stay in the presence of God. He has to flee. So when the waves would come, I would slip off to a quiet place and spend time in the Word of God. And within a few moments the anxiety would subside and I found myself once again free.
Michael W. Smith sings "This is how i fight my battles. It may look like i'm surround but I'm surrounded by You." When the enemy comes, may we understand that even just the name of the Lord, the presence of the Lord, is a safe place. A fortified tower in which we can rest when we are weary and need protection. We can try and fight on our own. We can stay out of the presence of the Lord and fight with all we have. Or we can call on the name of the Lord and recognize the strong tower that He is.
